Changing of Major / Minor or Academic Level
Undergraduate Students - If changing your major or minor, complete the Major/Minor Update Form available on the Registrar's website. Once the change of major or minor has been approved, a new Form I-20 will be ready for you pick up in three business days at the Office of International Affairs (OIA). The new Duration of Status rule effective on September 15, 2026 does not permit undergraduate international students to change their major in their first year of their program.
Graduate Students - If changing your major or changing your degree program (e.g. changing from a Ph.D. to a master's program), complete the Petition for Change or Major/Degree available through the Graduate Division website. Once the change of major or degree level has been approved, you will be notified when a new Form I-20 is ready for pick up from OIA. The new Duration of Status rule effective on September 15, 2026 does not permit graduate international students to change their major or make a lateral or lower move in degree level.
