How do I extend my Form I-20 or DS-2019?

F-1 and J-1 programs (I-20s and DS-2019s) can be extended if you are eligible, but the process now includes the additional step of filing the I-539 Application to Extend Nonimmigrant status with USCIS.

For F-1 and J-1 visa students, ISS will continue to require the Request for Program Extension form. The new I-20 or DS-2019 will be required to timely apply for the extension of status with USCIS by filing the I-539 Application up to 180 days before your current stay in the U.S. expires.

For J-1 visa exchange visitor scholars, UC Merced host departments will continue to submit J-1 program extension requests to ISS to issue the new DS-2019 that J scholars will use to timely apply for the extension of status with USCIS by filing the I-539 application.
