Visa Status Violations

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at UC Merced is required to terminate F-1 and J-1 SEVIS records under certain circumstances. A SEVIS termination may occur if a student has departed the United States, changed to a different immigration status, or has committed a violation of their visa status.

In cases where a student changes immigration status (such as changing from F-1 to H-1B or becoming a permanent resident), their F-1 or J-1 SEVIS record must be terminated. This does not mean they are in trouble, only that they are no longer maintaining F-1 or J-1 status because they have moved into a new immigration category.

Potential Reasons for Termination or Falling Out of Status

  • Unauthorized withdrawal from classes.
  • Unauthorized drop below full course of study.
  • Unauthorized employment.
  • Suspension or academic disqualification.
  • Failure to enroll in classes.
  • Failure to extend prior to the program end date.
  • Authorized absence from the U.S.
  • Change of non-immigrant status.
  • Adjustment to permanent resident status.

Please note: your grace period may be different or you may not have a grace period if you fall out of status. Please contact your DSO for more information if you're in this situation.
