Academic Disqualification and Suspension

Students dismissed by the university may lose their lawful F-1 or J-1 visa status. During the first semster on probation, students are strongly encouraged to see an OIA advisor to avoid violating visa status and to discuss possible options.

If you are unable to continue enrollment, you will need to take one of the following actions regarding your F-1 or J-1 visa status:

Option 1: Depart the U.S.

We understand that this can be a difficult and unexpected transition. However, leaving the U.S. in a timely manner ensures that you remain in good standing with U.S. immigration regulations and may help protect your ability to return in the future for further study or travel.

After your SEVIS record is terminated, you are no longer eligible for the benefits of your visa status, including employment and travel/re-entry. Any employment authorization will no longer be valid.

Once you depart the U.S., you may begin the process of applying to U.S. institutions and returning on a new I-20/DS-2019 if you wish.

Option 2: Transfer Your SEVIS Record to Another School

Another option is to transfer your SEVIS record to a new school and apply for reinstatement to F-1/J-1 status.

This option may allow you to remain in the U.S. while continuing your studies, but it requires careful planning and timely action. In order to be eligible, you must be admitted to another SEVP-certified school that is willing to accept your terminated SEVIS record and assist you in filing a reinstatement application with USCIS.

Please keep in mind:

  • Reinstatement is not guaranteed and must be approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
  • You must not engage in any employment or violate the terms of your status while your reinstatement is pending.
  • You should begin the transfer and reinstatement process as soon as possible after termination.

Before pursuing this option, we strongly recommend that you speak with the international student advisor at your new school to ensure you understand the steps, risks, and documentation required. You may also consult an immigration attorney for additional guidance.

Please contact us if you have questions about your options.
