Renewing Your Passport
Your passport is one of the most important documents you have as an international student in the U.S. It must always be valid at least six months into the future to maintain your legal immigration status.
If your passport is set to expire soon:
- Start early – Begin the renewal process several months before your passport’s expiration date.
- Contact your home country’s embassy or consulate in the U.S. to renew your passport. Requirements and processing times vary by country.
- Once you receive your new passport, submit a copy to our office so we can update your records.
What To Do If Your Passport Is Lost or Stolen
If your passport is lost or stolen while you're in the U.S.:
- File a police report with your local police department to document the loss or theft.
- Notify your home country’s embassy or consulate to begin the replacement process.
- If your U.S. visa was in the lost passport, please note that you cannot replace a visa from within the U.S. You must apply for a new visa the next time you travel abroad.
